If you buy one, buy this one — written here in Fowey, and the way into everything else she wrote. The cheapest book in the shop and the one most likely to come back to me as 'what else has she done'.
If you buy one du Maurier in Fowey, buy this one — Manderley is Menabilly, the house she loved just along the coast, so you're reading the book on the ground it was written about.
Best for anyone who's walked the Fowey coast, or is about to; the reader who wants the famous one rather than the deep cut.
The other two of the Cornish three sit beside it: Frenchman's Creek is the lighter, sunlit 17th-century romance on the Helford; Jamaica Inn is the bleak, gothic one up on Bodmin Moor. Rebecca is the psychological thriller — and the one with the local ground under it.
Worth knowing — this is the Virago Modern Classics paperback, and it opens in Monte Carlo before it ever reaches Manderley, so it isn't all Cornwall; the coast is the second half.
The details: Virago Modern Classics edition · Manderley based on Menabilly, near Fowey · one of the 'Cornish three' with Frenchman's Creek and Jamaica Inn.
