A Map of Foye
Where the pilchard boats came in, and the town's news went out.
Foye's quay was built of granite brought round by sea, stone by stone, in the years when the town sent more ships to sea than anywhere else on the coast. Everything arrived here first: salt and wine from France, timber from the north, and word of who had come home.
The steps at the downstream end are worn into a curve by four hundred years of boots. On a quiet evening you can still sit on them and watch the ferry make its crossing.
Rope, salt and diesel, and the steps worn into a curve. If you want a candle that smells of an actual harbour rather than a brochure, I keep one.
